Strawberries have a high water content, about 90 per cent, and are relatively low in carbohydrates or sugars (6-9 per cent, averaging 10-14 per fruit). They are low in protein and fat, providing an average of 35 kcal or 146 kJ per 100 g, which is relatively low for a fruit. Their sweet taste is due to the carbohydrates. They are rich in vitamin C, with only 150 g of strawberries covering the recommended daily intake of 80 mg for adults. The mineral content of strawberries per 100 kcal is considerable, particularly magnesium (34 mg), calcium (57 mg) and iron (1.14 mg).
